Interrelation of Phage Type and Some Enzymatic Activities of Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated from the Out Patients of the Hospital

Abstract
Studies were carried out to clarify the interrelation of the enzymatic activities of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the out patients and the possible relation between the above activity and the phage type. The results are summarized as follows:
1. All of the coagulase-negative strains and 33.5% of the 134 coagulase positive strains were non-typable.
2. The typable coagulase-positive strains revealed the greatest activity in their enzymatic action while the non-typable coagulase-positive strains showed less activity. Further test showed the coagulase-negative staphylococci as having the least degree of activity among the three.
3. A higher correlation existed among coagulase activity, mannitol fermentation, fibrinolysin and phosphatase production but the production of gelatinase, lipase, DNase and protease did not correlate with coagulase activity.
4. The enzymatic activity showed near similarity regardless of their phage group, but gelatinase activity of Group ¥², fibrinolysin and lipase activity of 80/81, phosphatase activity of mixed Group of ¥± and ¥², DNase activity of 80/81 and Group ¥° exhibited lower activity than other phage groups.
